“It was nice like 'Hello world. I am an artist.' That was 'rhythm of love'.

In the music video, Grande – which is surrounded by male dancers – breaks into dance numbers in a steaming gym. The idea came to him when he trained on an equinocium.

“I made my make -up in the mirror with my headphones and heard the song 'Boys'. When I made my make -up, I looked at all these men around me in towels and they were all so hot and so sexy and so male,” he recalls.

Grande continues: “It celebrates joy and masculinity and really dismisses these gender standards because we sometimes have very queer men in different straight rooms. It is so cool to do this. So I just wanted to recapture the gym in the changing room for the gays.”

For Grande, “Boys” is also an opportunity for listeners to “shake everything on the dance floor”.

“We are particularly attacked in the LGBTQ+ community, and therefore we have to find places where we can celebrate. And for me it was always the dance floor,” says Grande, who plays the Sulud Music Festival in June.

His debut album says Grande that he is glad that he “can think about so many different phases of my life”, including his marriage to Hale Leon and sobriety. His goal was to “be as gay as it is possible in every area of the media” – and his next stop was music.

“I am currently sober for seven and a half years, so a large part of my album exists in a soberness,” he says. “There is the album's center song, which is the choice of becoming sober, and then the first half of the album is a trade fair in the club.”

He continues: “I love each individual phase because she brought me to where I am today. I don't judge a single part of my life, but it was nice to go all the way back in the days of the Messy Ass club and then become sober.”

Grande also teases that there is a “gay wedding song” on the album, which he wrote about Leon and means “so much” to him

“We don't have a gay wedding song and now we do it. Gladly,” he says, adding that he is grateful that he has a man who “supports me so unconditionally”.

“Boys” is now outside.
