Hospice sister releases after granddaughter shares a video of alleged misconduct

A hospice nurse was released after a Facebook video was posted by the granddaughter of a terminally ill man, which the nurse abused in the Main Street in Providence in Providence.

Aryanna Pecoraro said she visited her 69-year-old grandfather John Carney in the early morning hours of May 3 when she heard a nurse who spoke to him aggressively through the closed door of his room. Carney was included in the hospice center on April 30 and was in the late phases of emphysem.

“I listen to her to my grandfather:” I don't come back to this room. I don't care if you fall out of bed on the floor. I'm tired of your BS, “said Pecoraro in an interview with NBC 10.

Pecoraro recorded the interaction from outside the room and later posted the film material on Facebook, where it quickly became viral, divided more than 500 times and pulled hundreds of comments. In the video, Carney can hear to moan while a nurse seems to imitate the noises.

Pecoraro said she heard a second nurse in the background.

The confrontation escalates when Pecoraro enters the room and questions the staff. In an exchange, her grandfather can hear her say: “You have to get me out of here.” She replies: “Don't worry, I'll get you out of here.”

Pecoraro told NBC 10 that she had slept in her grandfather's room every evening since he was admitted and was forced to visit this night, even though he was tired of work. “I work nights and was exhausted, but something told me I shouldn't leave him alone,” she said.

HopeHealth has published the following explanation in response to the video and the allegations:

HopeHealth has looked after our patients and their families with compassion, respect and dignity for almost half a century. For this reason, the latest incident is deeply worrying and disappointing for us. It does not reflect our culture and is completely incompatible with our values and the compassionate approach that we pursue for the care. We immediately took steps to examine and tackle the situation, including reporting on the incident to the Ministry of Health. HopeHealth Leadership initiated an investigation of the matter the next morning at 7:46 a.m. We contacted the family at 8:10 a.m. and planned a meeting with you on the same day at 9 a.m. The meeting took place at the family's room in the patient's room. At the meeting, HopeHealth apologized for the incident and listened to the family's concerns and assured them that this was a significant deviation from our practice. The employees involved in the incident were removed from the patient's care and new employees were commissioned. The person involved in the incident was permanently separated from employment.

Pecoraro said her family decided to remove Carney from the facility and maintain him at home with the help of her grandmother, a retired nurse. He died peacefully two days later.

“We could bring him home and he died in the family,” she said. “I feel peace that knows, but it shouldn't have happened that way.”

In a second video, the nurse can repeatedly apologize and said that she was “frustrated”, but did not say what she said. Pecoraro replied: “I don't accept your apology, Ma'am because I don't know you.”

Now Pecoraro hopes that her history sharpens consciousness and urges itself in the way how patients are treated behind closed doors.

“I believe that God brought me here to raise awareness of the situation,” she said. “Nobody should not be respected in their last days of life. That is disgusting behavior.”

She added: “I will miss him forever. I hope he is proud of me that I did what I do – and I hope justice is served.”

A memorial service for her grandfather took place on Friday evening.
