Chile World Cup qualifier scandal film 'Simulacro' in the works

Chile's Villano production means and storyboard media work with the Viven film (Switzerland) and the Chilean actor producer Benjamín Vicuña (“blocked”, “Fuga”) to sign a co-production contract for the feature film “Simulacro” during this year's Cannes market. The film directed by Juan Ignacio Sabatini is a political sports thriller based on a real event that shocked the world of football.

“Simulacro” plays in Brazil and dramatizes the 1989 scandal during a World Cup between Chile and Brazil when the Chilean goalkeeper Roberto Rojas organized an injury during the game at the Maracanã Stadium. The incident triggered global outrage and revealed deeply rooted problems in sports.

“The case of Condor Rojas was a milestone in my life and in the life of an entire generation of a country and, why not, a scar for world football,” says Vicuña Diversity. “To be able to make a film and show what really happened, how this moment was built, what is true, what is myth, what is real, what the consequences were, I find it extremely convincing because it is a story that is simply incredible all over the world.”

The film is about Chomsky, an obsessive radio journalist who examines the incident and reveals a network of corruption, political manipulation and media spectacle. The story combines thriller elements with black humor and moves between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

“We imagine a high-voltage film, full of action and touch of humor, temporarily to a police thriller who tapes lovable and reliable characters and not only football fans, but also to those who are fascinated by the madness that surrounds him,” says Sabatini.

“” Simulacro “is a story that seems so incredible that it seems invented, but it has happened. It is a story that reveals how great national stories are built up and deal with our collective memory and the global spectacle,” explains Gabriela Sandoval of Storyboard and Carlos Nuñez. “In the Marché du film we are looking for partners, especially for Brazilian, who want to be part of this story that appeals to the audience around the world.”

The co-producers Javier Krause and Sebastián Cepeda add up “Simulacro” a unique opportunity for VIVEN films: the starting point of our project development plan in co-production with Latin America. We are both of our Argentine roots and the line request associated with the line with the line, and the manager. Bring these fables to life. ”

The producers are actively looking for Brazilian and additional Latin American partners because a large part of the film plays in Brazil.
