Monticello “I just feel better when I eat real food. A healthy food just feels better,” said Caydon of the Monticello Middle School.

Liz Stretch, Real Food Education Manager at a single bite, said that she was both impressed and encouraged by the student's remark and he could positively influence his classmates.

“It makes it worth it if you hear such things from the students when they really get what they want to share with them.”

Seventh graders from Robert J. Kaiser Middle School in Monticello took part in an experience in food education and explored local farms, classrooms and restaurants to learn something about healthy eating. At the Thanksgiving Farm in the Center for Discovery, the students toured greenhouses, barns and fields and discovered how biodynamic agriculture and community efforts support nutritious food production.

Stretch explained the importance of this type of education.

“We talk to them about the differences between real foods and processed foods in order to improve their knowledge of these problems and to influence their behavior and enable them to make better decisions that affect their health.”

For stretch, it is very worthwhile to “see” children when it comes to eating full -value food.

“I see some of these children shine, and for me that's the miracle. It makes it worth it.”
