The woman crossed the street when she was hit by a black sur-Ron bike that drove north.

An 18-year-old man was later arrested for the suspicion of causing death through dangerous driving and was released for deposit.

The sections of the Burdon Road and the Lidcombe Close were closed for about four hours.

SGT Andrew Ferguson from the Northumbria police said it was a “devastating incident” and appealed to witnesses to report.

“We know that this is a pretty busy street section with many people and vehicles in the area.

The police said that the vehicle involved had been recovered and that the next relative of the woman was supported.
