Brooklyn Bridge Ship Ship Crash: Cuauhtémoc, Mexican naval ship, meets the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, kills 2 | What we know

New York – At least two people were killed and about 20 injured when a Mexican naval training ship on a global goodwill tour met the bottom of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on Saturday evening.

At the time of the incident, there were 277 people on the sailing ship called Cuauhtémoc, and everyone should be taken into account, officials said on Saturday.

Dramatic video shows the masts of Cuauhtémoc, which hit and break the underside of the bridge while the ship passes and falls in the direction of the deck.

We know the following:

What happened

The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. local time when the ship from New York Pier 17 drove up, where it was docked in the South Street Seaport Museum for five days.

The masts of the ship – shit in lights – met the bridge, broke out the impact and let rubble fell on the deck of the ship.

The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, said the ship had lost power. City officials previously said that “mechanical problems” might have caused the incident, but it was waiting for the fact that all information has been provisional. An investigation continues.

The New York fire brigade said in an e -mail to CNN that she received the call that a ship had hit the bridge around 8:39 p.m.

The video of the training ship of the Mexican Navy shortly after the Brooklyn Bridge made it showed people who hang on at least one of his masts. On high ships such as the Cuauhtémoc, it is a ceremonial tradition for seafarers to climb the masts and to go when they leave or arrive in the harbor.

“We could see that some people were pulled somehow,” an eyewitness, Flavio Moreira, told CNN. “I think there were some of the employees, they were on the top of the boat. And they swung around, back and forth as soon as the ship hit the bridge.”

Several killed

Two people were killed and two remain in a critical condition, said Adams. The two, the died, fell from one of the ship masts, the law enforcement officer told CNN. They were declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital, the official said.

“At that time, of the 277 on board, 19 persistent injuries, 2 of which remain in a critical condition, and 2 more unfortunately died of their injuries,” wrote Adams about X.

The Mexican Navy previously said that a total of 22 people were injured, 19 of whom were brought to hospitals.

The Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the two people killed were occupation members and sent their condolences to their families.

“We are deeply sad about the loss of two crew members of the Cuauhtémoc training ship who died in the unfortunate accident in the New York port. Our sympathy and our support go to their families,” said Sheinbaum in an early Sunday in X.

Sheinbaum said the Mexican Navy supported those who were injured in the incident and that the Mexican ambassador in the USA and the Mexican Consulate General supports the marine.

An examination in progress

The ship seemed to lose power at 8:20 p.m. when the captain maneuvered the ship, which forced the ship to the pillar of the bridge, and the mast of the ship hit the bridge, said Wilson Aramboles, head of the New York police authority, at a press conference on Saturday.

The National Transportation Safety Board carries out an investigation.

The Mexican authorities described the Cuauhtémoc ship as a three-mast stainless steel with a length of around 300 feet and a height of around 160 feet, a press release from 2024 from one of its training cruises.

Government documents show that Brooklyn Bridge has a navigation release of 127 feet, about 30 feet shorter than the height of the sailing ship.

The Brooklyn Bridge, which seemed to be structurally intact, there was no visible damage.

“While the inspections continue to continue, there are no signs of structural damage to Brooklyn Bridge,” said the Ministry of Transport from NY in one post on X.

The traffic was temporarily closed in both directions for about 40 minutes because the emergency services reacted to the scene. After a preliminary inspection, it was reopened later, said Adams.

According to the law enforcement officer, this ship was moved to Pier 36 by Manhattan 36 along the East River.

What do we know about the ship?

The Cuauhtémoc is a training ship of the Mexican Navy and described by officials as a diplomatic symbol of Mexico abroad.

The ship as an “ambassador and knight of the sea” was the ship as part of a global goodwill tour in New York and was on the way to Iceland at the time of the incident.

A spokesman for Sail4th 250 events in New York City announced that the Cuauhtémoc ship “welcomed dignitaries and media as part of its New York stop on his global tour”.

The sailing ship should join the parade of international large ships to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States on July 4, 2026 – in the event, which calls “the largest flotilla of high ships from all over the world”.

The ship, built in Spain in 1981, was acquired by the Mexican Navy to train cadets and officers. It regularly takes part in large regattas all over the world. According to a press release from one of his global cruises, it was used by the Heroic Naval Military School, an elite military academy in Mexico.

From last year, the ship had visited 212 ports in 64 countries, with 756,085 nautical miles being sailing, the latter taking 35 trips around the world, the press release says.
