Health experts warn of an increase in deaths in children's flu

According to the centers for the control and prevention of diseases, this flu season recorded over 27,000 deaths and more than 200 deaths in the United States in the United States. It is the worst flu season that the country has seen for 15 years.

“It is estimated that we had 47 million cases of influenza, over 600,000 hospital stays and 27,000 deaths,” said Thomas Russo, professor and boss for infectious diseases for the University of the Jacobs School of Medicine from Buffalo.

What you need to know

  • This flu season had over 27,000 deaths and more than 200 deaths for children across the country
  • Twenty -five of the 226 deaths of children's flu were children in the state of New York, who made up over 10% of deaths this season
  • The health commissioner of New York, Dr. James McDonald noticed that of the 25 children who died of the flu in New York, only one of them was vaccinated

This flu season not only takes more life than in over a decade, but also leads to more deaths in children. Health experts say that more than 10% of these deaths have occurred in the state of New York, in which less than 6% of children live in the nation.

“Unfortunately, there were 226 deaths in children and 25 of them in the state of New York,” said Russo.

This is the highest recorded number in state history.

Dr. James McDonald found that only one of them was vaccinated by the 25 children who died at the flu in New York and five others were too young to be vaccinated.

“Unfortunately, the vaccination rates had dropped this season, which contributed with a lot to contribute to the increased number of cases and poor results,” said Russo. “Although we want to believe that our children are bulletproof, from infections, influenza in general, they are generally at risk of maintaining severe infections and achieving a bad result.”

Health experts say that the increase in flu cases is a result of pandemic.

“Overall, our population immunity was probably reduced due to the pandemic,” said Russo. “During the pandemic there was less flu, less exposure and a result of the population as a whole was more susceptible.”

They say that with vaccination rates the best way to protect children from the flu is to increase the rates.

“Although our influenza vaccination is imperfect, it reduces the likelihood that they are infected, considerably when they are infected. They develop serious illnesses and land in the hospital and have a bad result.”

McDonald reminds the families that children have to be at least 6 months old to get a flu shot and says that this is the best protection for them.
