Rooney seemed to be hit near his right eye. It was not clear whether the stick influenced its eye or cut it directly above his eye, but Rooney was bleeding heavily within seconds after the ice was beaten.

A stretcher was released for Rooney, luckily not used. The official was able to cut off with the help, but he had a large towel on his head and still seemed to try to control the bleeding. An alternative referee replaced him on the ice.

After Rooney had gone down the tunnel, the workers had to scrape off his blood from the ice before the game could take up again. Mikkola did not initially notice his Stick -Hit Rooney, reported the TNT program.
