Connor Lotterman, student of the Michigan Grand Valley State University

A student in Michigan was killed when, according to reports, several shots were fired through the ground during a “deliberate” shootout.

Connor Lotterman, a 19-year-old engineering student at Grand Valley State University, was hit by a ruthless ball from a bedroom on the upper floor during the party on May 9, Wood-TV reported.

The tragic scene developed shortly after 11 p.m. in the municipality of Tallmadge, Wed, 6 miles east of the school campus.

According to officials, a 20-year-old suspected shooter unloaded several rounds from his own weapon into the planks when 10-20 people celebrate inside.

“The shootout was pretty intended,” Jake Sparks of the Sheriff from Ottowa County Sheriff told the outlet. “Several rounds were fired. It was not as if it were a random discharge of one shots. This was released. Although the result of the shootout led to a random death, this shootout was intended.”

Lotterman was brought to a local hospital in a critical condition, but died on May 10, three days before his 20th birthday.

The forensician's official ruled Lotterman's death as an accident, with alcohol being played against a role.

“Encourage people to be wise, firearms and alcohol don't mix it,” said Sparks. “I think this situation could have been avoided without these things mixing.”

The alleged shooter was not publicly identified as a police and the public prosecutor is considering criminal charges at the fatal shootout.

Lotterman was the youngest of five and is survived by his parents, siblings, grandparents and nieces and nephews, according to an online afterlife.

His sister mourned for her younger brother in a touching birthday message that was posted on social media.

“Thank you for being the best little brother a girl can ask,” wrote Marielle Lotterman in the tribute. “I am so grateful to God for the 20 amazing years they had on this earth.”

Lotterman completed his second year at the GVSU when he was killed.

“The Grand Valley community is sad about Connor's tragic death,” said Dean of the students, Aaron Haight, in a statement obtained from Wood TV. “In the name of President Mantella, the Laker Community is expanding our deepest sympathy for his family and friends.”
