Discover the new approach of United Utilities in the detection of water leaks

This year has been the driest start in England since 1956 and the reservoirs are lower than usual in the season. The detection and repair of LECKS has a top priority for United Utilities. In the meantime, over 100 teams work around the clock and repair over 800 leaks per week in a network of hookahs that is large enough to extend around the world. It saves more than 3.5 million liters a day.

With leakage at the lowest level of all time, the water company also invests more than 380 million GBP in order to replace the water networks with more durable, more flexible pipes. These are built to withstand high pressures, temperature fluctuations and in front of bursts. In 2025, United Utilities replaces about 170 km of main substances -enough to stretch Manchester to Blackpool and back again -a 40 million pound -improvement program that will play a key role in securing water supply for millions of customers in the region.

Use the latest technology to recognize and find more leaks

The satellite technology with which water on the Mars was recorded is now difficult to recognize water leaks. United Utilities has teamed up with Suez to deliver the most modern project that uses satellites to recognize water leaks in its clean water network.

Grant Batty, director of water services at United Utilities, explained: “Many leaks pass on whistles in terms of real estate and our customers can know us if they recognize signs of a problem. We definitely do not want them to stop.

“The real challenge is to find these leaks that never show signs on the surface. They can be buried quite deep underground and is very difficult to determine. The use of satellite technology for scanning the entire region is a player because we can determine your location and be repaired as quickly as possible.”

The satellites travel through the atmosphere, 630 km above the earth, and are equipped with scan technology, which can scan through cloud, forest and depth areas to a depth of 2.5 m. It uses an algorithm to see traces of clean drinking water.

Large areas can be covered with a single sweep with satellites. After examining the service in Manchester, it has now been expanded to cover all five counties, including cumbria, so that hundreds of additional leaks can be repaired.

Grant Batty added: “As a result, we already save at least six million liters of water every day and the crowd only increases.”

Since further leaks were discovered, the partners of United Utilities have also hired more people to carry out repair work.

The United Utilities teams are now also working with the world's first AI-Loose recognition system, FIDO. The company was the first to beat the pioneering technology when it joined the innovation laboratory in 2020. The AI ​​platform quickly uses machine learning to interpret the unique data traces through leaks. Now a new Smart app helps to bring lick listening skills to the next stage. This is just one of the technologies and techniques used to reduce the leak and avoid water waste.
