What is femicide? Murders of models in Colombia, Mexico, emphasize the crime against women

Another cold -blooded murder of a young model has sent shock waves both in Colombia and on social media. Maria Jose Estupinan (22), a student and an influencer, was fatally shot in front of her house in Cucuta on May 15th. The attack, which took place in the neighborhood of La Riviera, was carried out by a man who was core worker as core worker, according to the local police.

“She was killed by a man who pretended to deliver a package,” said Colonel Leonardo Capacho from Cucutas Metropolitan Police in India today.

Estupinan recently won a legal dispute against her ex-boyfriend in a case of domestic violence and ensured a judicial payment of 30 million Colombian pesos (approx. $ 7,000). Your ex-boyfriend is now a suspect and the authorities are investigating whether this legal victory can be associated with her murder.

What is femicide?

According to the UN women, femicide is defined as a deliberate killing of women with a gender-specific motivation. It differs from murder, where the motivation may not be gender -specific. According to UN data, partners and family members deliberately killed a woman every 10 minutes in 2023.

Estupinan's killing follows the cold -blooded murder of a Mexican model – Valeria Marquez -, which was shot in its beauty salon on May 13th. According to reports, the authorities said they had examined the case as a female.

Marquez 'killing was similar to that of Estupinan when the armed men approached women in both cases, the specifications of being a maternity agent. Referring to Amnesty International, CNN reported that a quarter of Mexican deaths were examined as female in 202 and at least one case was registered in the country's 32 states.
