The Mexicans mourn for the death of two young marine cadets who were killed on Saturday when the training tall Ship ARM Cuauhtémoc fell against the Brooklyn Bridge.

América Sánchez, 20, and 23-year-old Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos were among the 277 crew members on board the sailing ship of the Mexican marine when his three masts snapped while beating the bridge.

According to Mexican media, Sánchez was one of the cadets who were on the mast at the time of the accident.

Twenty -two other crew members were injured, three of them are critical, said the Mexican Navy.

The commander of the Mexican Navy, Admiral Pedro Raymundo Morales, said that all crew members would soon be returned to their homeland.

The body of América Sánchez will later be transferred to the naval academy on Monday in her home country Veracruz.

Her mother, Rocío Hernández, described 20-year-old Kadett as “an exemplary daughter”, who was “a committed student” who aimed to become a marine engineer.

Ms. Hernández paid her daughter in front of a spontaneous altar that is decorated with flowers and photos of América Sánchez, which was disguised for her “Quinceañera”.

“She was a warrior, a soldier who did not give up and always fought for her goals,” she said, adding that her daughter only had a year until she graduated.

“She [the Navy] Will stop a private ceremony in your honor in the Veracruz Naval Academy and then I'll bring her home, “said Ms. Hernández when I thank all relatives, friends and teachers of her daughter [América] with affection “.

In San Mateo del Mar, a coastal city in the state of Oaxaca also paid friends and relatives of Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos after the young Kadett was confirmed as the second fatal victim of the crash.

His friends told the local media that the 23-year-old had always dreamed of stepping into his father's footsteps and becoming a seaman.

On board the Cuauhtémoc, also known as “Knight of the Seas”, was his greatest wish, they recalled.

“The sea saw him born and the sea was a witness of his death,” a friend of the media and added that “we all who knew him would remind him of an intelligent teenager”.

The examination, as the accident happened, is still in progress.

The police officers of the New York police said that the Cuauhtémoc had lost power when it left the New York port and was pulled by the current towards Brooklyn Bridge.

The three masts, which measure more than 48 m, reached the basis of the bridge, which corresponds to the website of the New York transport department – only an release of 41.1 m.

All three masts collapsed and video material from spectators shows some of the crew members who dangle from the courtyards and sails.

Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, secretary of the navy in Mexico, said in a statement that the results of all investigation would be pursued with “total transparency and responsibility”.

The Cuauhtémoc left Acapulco, Mexico, on April 6 on a tour with stops in New York and Aberdeen, Scotland, for the city's Tall Ships race in July.
