I found a 20 -year video in the world of Warcraft that I did, it's like a time capsule

Last year there was a big milestone for one of my favorite games of all time: World of Warcraft, which crossed a very rare 20 -year live service.

For various reasons, World of Warcraft (WoW) is a special game, not only for me, but also for the game industry in general. It was not the first MMORPG, but it was the first to make the genre really popular with the western audience, which made the gameplay familiar to those who were lived for action -oriented RPGs and reduced the grinding to more tasty levels that were previously built in a really massive world that was already rich in Lore.

Fast lead 20 years, and WoW is a completely different game in a completely different time. The game is now completely from Microsoft and Xbox after Activision is recorded. We finally get the accommodation of players for World of Warcraft and open them to all new spectators. The game was increasingly designed to respect the players' leisure time, while they are more likely to be addressed to solo players and casual players and at the same time maintain difficulties on an eSport level. We have several game modes from World of Warcraft retail trade that push history forward, hardcore modes with perma death and even classic and imitate the game like 20 years ago. And what it was 20 years ago was really innovative – in several ways.

World of Warcraft came when I was 18, which now feels almost like another dimension. The online video just started to take part in traction, and World of Warcraft gameplay videos were at the top of this new wave of user -generated content.

The web series such as Pure Pwnage and the legendary Leeroy Jenkins Clip have recently reached its 20 -year anniversaries together with WoW, and I went to Warcraftvideos.com (which is still shocking completely!) To see if my old WoW -PVP videos still existed. And lo and behold, you do it for sure.

I called this “most boring PvP video ever” because it literally only I was when I healed my rank 14 Warrior Guild partner when she ran around the card that met everything to death. It should be an ironic reaction to all over 1337 per PvP videos that flood the web in 2004.

What turned me upside down in the video beyond the silly gameplay is different indications of easier times. Speak the cringy 1337. The ventrilo-sound-to-talk sound effect back before we had a discord. The crushed compression of Windows film manufacturers before we had MP4 and H.264. The aspect ratio of 4: 3, before broad image monitors were widespread and affordable. My terrible keyboard shoots and minimal use of keyboard before I learned Wasd 1234. I didn't even have an RGB mouse, I'm sure.

I was inspired by Leeroy Jenkins and others who created this early world of Warcraft “Machinima” style videos, as they were known at the time, and I led me a rabbit hole of the content of the content -maybe Ironically leads here to write this silly article.

Pay attention

It took about a year for World of Warcraft's initial start seriously and changed the online video delivery forever. Since then I have found a career on YouTube and on the web on Windows Central and my own live podcast, which covers gaming, like thousands of others out there. I am incredibly grateful for the trip, but it would be a lie to say that I am not nostalgic for these simpler times, and friends with whom I got out of contact.

If they had asked me 20 years ago if I thought I would still play WoW, if I approach 40, I would have told honestly yes – but with the restriction that the game continued to receive new content. I don't think I believed that a second world of Warcraft would still be about 20 years old, while I would still receive really big new, permanent gameplay functions such as Solo Dungeon Delves or Player Housing.

World of Warcraft may not be the zeitgeist Buster when Leeroy Jenkins inspired a generation of young video game creators, but I think there is still a lot of potential in this legendary game that I still call at home. May it live for a long time.
