Gary Lineker steps back from Match of the day After more than two decades against the BBC flagship show. His last appearance in the program is expected this week.

The 64-year-old confirmed his decision at the beginning of this season, although he was originally supposed to continue working with the BBC on another football reporting, including the FA Cup and the 2026 World Championship. Gary was married twice. His first marriage to Michelle Cockayne ended in 2006 after 20 years and four sons – George, Harry, Tobias and Angus. He married the actress and model Danielle Bux 2009, but the couple separated in 2016.

In 2019 he said: “Danielle and I are the best buddies, we still speak three times a day. When she comes to London, she stays with me.”

Danielle has married again since then and has a daughter. Gary stays single and said in a recent interview The Times: “I like being alone … I don't feel lonely. I have the strange date here and there, but nothing serious.”

He also added: “I am married most of my adult life. Two really good marriages, I am friends with both.”

During an episode of his rest, Micah Richard was joked that Gary needed a new partner. Alan Shearer replied that Gary already had one – filest his dog.

Gary replied: “Absolutely. Loyal to the end, this boy, a beautiful boy.”

Filbert, a rescue dog from California, is named after the Filbert Street, the former stadium of Leicester City, in which Gary began his football career.

Gary's future at the BBC was re -examined after a recent contribution in social media triggered a counter reaction.

Last week he released a video on Instagram, which included pictures that were generally considered anti -Semitic. The post was deleted quickly and Gary later apologized publicly.

He said: “I very much regret these references. I would never knowingly share something anti -Semitic. It was a mistake for my part, for which I apologize without reservation.”

After the controversy, the sun reported that Gary had met with BBC executives and agreed to remove all BBC programs, including the planned reporting on the 2026 World Cup.

A BBC source was quoted: “Gary realized that his position was unsustainable … he offered to step down at the end of the season.”

Gary still has to officially confirm whether he will continue to align the BBC 2026 World Cup reporting. If the reported exit is true, this would mark the end of his 26-year cooperation with the station.

At the moment Gary focuses on his final game of the day and thanked the fans for their support at the beginning of this week. It remains to be seen whether he will continue his podcast and media -related work full -time.
