Three workers who were killed in the scaffolding collapse on the Port Arthur LNG Terminal

On Tuesday, a scaffold collapsed on a tank under construction in an LNG export terminal in Texas and killed three men.

The accident occurred on the construction site for the Port Arthur LNG plant Sempra, about 90 miles east of Houston. Around 0200 hours of local time on Tuesday, a scaffold gave in on a new LNG content tank with concrete. Three workers fell several stories and suffered fatal injuries. Two others were injured and stranded on the scaffolding; The injured men were treated and released from the hospital.

The deceased included Felipe Mendez, 25; Felix Lopez, 42; and Dontrell Magee, 41, according to local 12 news. Magee was found alive at the crime scene, but later died in the hospital, Jefferson County said the local media.

The contractor Bechtel temporarily stopped working on Port Arthur LNG for an internal review and sent craftsmen to their families. In a statement, Bechtel said that an “incident of the tank jumping form” had taken place and that he would work with the authorities during an examination.

Images from the scene showed a single section of the circular scaffold, which depends on the structure and was still attached to one side.

Port Arthur LNG is a big project and the construction of the first phase began in 2023. It is up to date for the completion of 2027-8, and thousands of people are employed for the project.

The first phase alone will have two liquefied trains and an export capacity of 13 million tons per year (MTPA). It is located on the Sabine-Neches ship canal next to Golden Pass LNG and Sabine Pass LNG.
