Legacy pipe licks oil in the port of San Juan

The Incident Management team from San Juan in San Juan reacts to an oil discharge from a legacy pipe structure between Piers 2 and 3 in San Juan Habo, Puerto Rico.

“The source of the oil discharge is contained and it enables normal port companies to continue in piers 2 and 3 if our examination and reaction efforts are continued,” said Lt. Cmdr. Ray Lopez, head of the Coast Guard San Juan Incident Management.

After a patrol from Station San Juan and Incident Management Division, the watch station in the San Juan sector received a national staff in San Juan Harbor on April 11th. If the oil can be associated with similar pollution incidents in the region, the team of the coast guard collected samples that are to be analyzed in the Marine Safety Labor Labor Coast Guard.

Due to the potential effects on the waterway, the coast guard activated the oil pill liability fund and commissioned Clean Harbor Environmental Services, Inc. as an organization to remove the oil spill for the incident. On April 15, Clean Harbor crew temporarily stuck the affected pipe and exhibited the absorbent containment in order to record and contain all material released into the water.

Currently, the staff and Clean Harbor crews are actively monitoring the sector of the coast guard, San Juan Incident Management Division, the container area by replacing the absorption boom and repositioning the boom as required.

On May 5, the division of the Coast Guard Sector San Juan Incident Management received the results of the Marine Safety Labor Coast Guard, which confirmed that the rehearsals collected were similar to the samples from Pier 9 and 2021 Pier 4 Mystery Spills from 2024 Pier 9 and 2021. These important similarities indicate that these samples can be associated with a common source of oil oil.

The future planned cleaning processes include the implementation of an underground assessment of the underside in order to find a possible source, as well as the further planning and development of potential strategies for restoring reaction for every free oil product in order to reduce the likelihood of future incidents.
