Corbin Coombs' records under highlights

Kaselle Davis von Las Cruces wins three events, two centennial athletes win field events, Sofia Herrera takes spear can gold for Las Cruces.

Corbin Coombs put his name in lights throughout the season, and he simply did it again in Albuquerque.

The Star Track Athlete from Organ Mountain broke two state records from May 16 to 17 at the championships of NMAA 4A and 5a in the UNM-LICHTETICH-State-State-State Record.

The Wake Forest Commit broke the 3200-meter running record with a time of 8: 50.22, just under 10 seconds ahead of Rio Ranchos Charlie Vause at 8: 59.85. Both times shattered the previous state record of 9: 07.38, which was determined by Eldorados Matt Tebo in 2006, with Coombs officially holding the record. His Knights teammate Jeron Wisner finished third with a time of 9: 29.07.

“I thought 'I think I have a quick last round in me,” said Coombs to the Albuquerque Journal. “So I will try to take some swing in the last round. And then just make sure that the move is hard enough where I don't just get in Lane Two to run the same pace.”

The next day, Coombs earned another record. He won the 5a 800-meter final in 1: 50.33 seconds and in 1993 the 32-year mark of 1: 51.73 from Las Cruces' David Krummenacher. Coombs defeated Vause again, who took second place 1: 52.53.

The two runs mean that Coombs set up three state records this year when he broke the state's fastest mileage record on February 8. His 4: 02.59 time defeated the previous record, which was set up in 2004 by La Cuevas Shadrack Kiptoo with 0.06 seconds.

Coombs helped with 64 points in the two-day meeting with 64 points with 64 points, which only took second place among 5A schools. Later he won a third event in the 1600-meter run by 4: 13.76.

Organ Mountain won two more events. The 1600-meter-sprint medley team of the boys from Caleb Rey, Jaden Gonzales, Donnail Escudero and Wisner came home in the 5A final at the 5A 200 meter final at 22.03 seconds.

Las Cruces' Davis wins at three events

Kaselle Davis became a joint event during the route season in several events and occurred again in Albuquerque.

The Indiana Commit and 2025 Las Cruces Sun-News athlete of the year won three events on Saturday and took home the 5A girl's high jump title for the first time with a 5-foot jump of 6 inches. It was the only one that ends the jumps with 5-foot-2, 5-foot 4 and 5-foot 6, and even tried a 5-foot jump of 5 feet three times.

Davis then won the 5A final in the 400 and 200-meter strings in times of 56.07 and 25.37 seconds. Her 200-meter victory, Davis' last race of the state meeting, was a photo finish when she defeated Anayjah Garcia from Albuquerque High for only 0.01 seconds.

Davis won almost a fourth event, but became second in the 5a 100-meter dash final with 12.4 seconds and lost to Hobbs' Faith Vine period of 12.28 seconds.
