Android Auto will soon receive weather and video apps, says Google, says Google

Google has announced that Android Auto is about to receive more apps, including broader access to weather apps and the arrival of video and browser apps in the future.

Android Auto has always been a bit restrictive when it comes to which types of apps you can download. Each app requires approval and must fit into a certain category. In recent years, however, Google has expanded which types of apps can be carried out on the display of their car, and there is another expansion around the corner.

In the I/O 2025, Google announced that Android Auto “soon” wins two new app categories. Browser apps and video apps will eventually be available for Android Auto in the future. Google expressly says that video apps on Android Auto are required that the connected telephone is carried out Android 16, and even then it only works with “compatible cars”. It is almost guaranteed that these video apps on Android Auto require parking the vehicle.

Google also adds that weather “completed” apps at the Beta degree in Android Auto and Android Automotive. Developers can now publish weather apps for both platforms without additional approval as long as they meet the quality guidelines.

Already in December, Google updated its developer guidelines for weather apps for cars, which caused some to assume that these apps were newly available. In reality, weather apps have been available for Android Auto since the beginning of 2023, but only a few have been approved. The locks are now officially open and you can expect many more weather apps to appear for your car.
