Trump-Putin Call Notes Diplomatic victory for Russia, but economic goals remain in the suspension

Since his invasion in 2022, President Vladimir V. Putin from Russia has wanted to end war in Ukraine on his conditions. And in the complex diplomatic maneuvers of the past few weeks, the Russian leader was able to defend his approach to negotiate a comprehensive peace agreement while he continues to wage war in Ukraine that he believes that he is going in his way.

Its hard position has withstanded the pressure of Ukraine, the European Union and until recently from the United States to an immediate ceasefire. After talking to Mr. Putin on Monday, President Trump said that he welcomed direct peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, which in fact made a final break with his earlier promise to end the conflict quickly.

But Mr. Putin's diplomatic victory could or at least undermine or at least delay his wider economic goals to normalize relationships with the United States.

After talking to Mr. Putin, Trump emphasized that the American economic approach with Russia would come to peace in Ukraine. If Mr. Trump connects the two problems with each other, Russia could limit this to an economic purgatory, whereby there is little immediate chance of facilitation of western sanctions or the foreign investments dangling from Trump.

“Russia wants to conduct large trading with the United States when this catastrophic” bloodbath “is over and I agree,” said Trump on Monday after calling in a statement.

Vice President JD Vance made the same point in a strong point of view.

“Look, there are many economic advantages if you thaw the relationships between Russia and the rest of the world, but you will not receive these advantages if you kept killing many innocent people,” he told reporters on Monday after President Volodymyr Zelensky from Ukraine in Rome the day before. The Kremlin said that the war in Ukraine was only one of the topics discussed by Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump and that the leaders were still obliged to reset.
