Injury leads the outfield of the state of Wichita to coaching as a career

The Outfields of Wichita State University, Lauren Lucas, began working on the business side of professional sport. Five years later, she plans to train softball in college.

She changed partly due to a shoulder injury that led her from the field and the shelter as a coach.

In the summer of 2023 she helped to train a youth team in Texas while taking the time to rest her shoulder. In 2024 she ended up during the State of Wichita. She immersed in a role as an unofficial assistance trainer and specialized in the hit.

Both roles taught her that she liked to work with young people and wanted to stay in the game. WSU trainer Kristi Bredbener and deputy head coach Elizabeth Economon supported the plan.

“I had a conversation with coach B last year,” said Lucas. “She said,” You have to train. I know you. You have to train. “If one of the best coaches I have ever played for, I think I was a great coach, that speaks for me volumes.”

Lucas, who is working on her master's degree in sports management, is a double Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar athlete.

She will stay with the WSU next year to work as a graduate. The economic is looking forward to having another person who helps with slashes.

“It will be great in it,” said Economon. “She makes it at such a high level and has a good understanding of it.”

Lucas from Little Elm, Texas, will end her career as one of the top grilles in shocker history. This season, the team introduces them with a stroke of 0.396 and 41 runs.

In 2023 she received the third team of the Softball America Third Team All-American Honors and All-Conference honors after she was 62 RBI.

Wichita State ends his regular season plan with a game on Wednesday (April 30th) against Kansas in Wilkins Stadium and this weekend in Memphis. The American Athletic Conference Championship begins on May 7th in Tampa, Fla.
