Stockton Police moderates the first NBA 2K tournament to connect to local young people

In order to strengthen relationships with local adolescents and to promote a positive image in the community, the Stockton Police Department organized its first youth activities for public security and NBA 2K video game tournament last weekend at the Weber Point Center.

32 high school students took part in the basketball video game to have a chance to win a Sony PlayStation 5, and a follow-up match with police chief Stanley McFadden in his office.

“This is about the youth,” said McFadden, who gave the idea. “We would like to show you that there are so many ways to do incredible things. Today it's about law enforcement authorities – it's about conversation, connection and fun.”

The event contained gaming trailers, practical demonstrations with equipment for public security and stands by community partners such as Kayge Gaming, a local organization that uses teenagers and lawyers for a safe, technically based youth engagement.

“This is a safe place where children can be,” said McFadden. “And that's just the beginning – we want to make this an annual tradition.”

Participants like Jeremy, a local parent, praised the efforts. “Officers who connect with the youth will help them to become more respectful and understanding. Events like this can really make a difference,” he said.

Miss La, the founder of Kayge Gaming, announced how the partnership of her organization with the police was inspired by her son's vision over a decade ago. “When the police appear like this, it helps children see them as people who take care of their security. This is powerful.”

When the tournament narrowed to his eight top players, the energy stayed up, on the screen and in the crowd. Whether they won or lost, the participants went with smile, high-fives and the feeling of being seen.

“Today we don't just talk about the future,” said McFadden. “We invest in it.”
