NCHP soldiers are not charged with “dishonest” pro wake :: wral.com in dealing with fatal raleigh crash.

Two North Carolina State Highway Patrol Troopers, who are examined to deal with a fatal crash in Raleigh, will not have any charges for the indictment.

Lorrin Freeman, district prosecutor of Wake County, announced that SGT. Garrett Macario and Sgt. Matthew Morrison was not reasonably charged after a long review of the events around the wreck, in which Tyrone Mason was killed in October 2024.

Freeman said that the evidence submitted in the case would not support successful law enforcement, although their behavior did not match the NCSHP standards.

“While the initial false statements of Trooper Macario arrived to the officers who arrived on site to examine this wreck, indulge and cause considerable concerns … its subsequent truthful statements within the relevant time frame prevent the state from being able to advance successful law enforcement,” wrote Freeman.

“While their dishonesty violates the standards that law enforcement officers have to comply with, the district prosecutor does not pursue any criminal complaints because the evidence would not support successful law enforcement.”

Freeman said that she had shared her concerns about the implementation of Macario and Morrison with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, which is authorized to decide whether to continue to be employed.

In almost 200 cases, Freeman has already been charged in almost 200 cases in which one of the macario was the arrest.

Mason's family and her legal team met with Freeman in the public prosecutor on Wednesday when she explained to them that she would not charge the soldiers. Lawyer Bakari Sellers said he could not share any details of the video due to the judge's confidentiality order.

Wral was part of a media coalition that fought for the film material became public. Freeman believes that the video will be available publicly either Wednesday or Thursday.

The sellers expressed disappointments about the decision.

“I will only say that we have more questions than answers,” said seller. “We believe that the officials not only committed the proper procedure that night, but also the disability of the judiciary. I think the disappointment is that I would argue that the district prosecutor of Wake County treats these officials differently than any average citizen to give them the advantage of doubt that they would otherwise not get.”

Family members were visibly upset and left a meeting in the Wake County Courthouse on Wednesday. They refused to speak to Wral News.

“I believe that the public is not only for the state patrol, but also for the Raleigh Police Department if this process unfolds,” added the sellers.

SGT. Macario and Sgt. Morrison was suspended in January for an examination of their credibility towards the treatment of the situation.

In January, Freeman said she saw evidence of this fatal crash that raises questions about Macarios credibility and truthfulness. Freeman's view of the film material from the crash led to a deeper examination.

Wral News turned to the Highway Patrol to inquire about Macario and Morrison's employment status.
