Google Beam Futuristic AI-powered 3D video chats come up this year

Beam me up, Google. Video chats could combine a much more science fiction feeling with Google Beam, a AI-driven video communication platform, on which they should meet personally.

Google announced Beam, a development of his Google Starline technology, at its annual I/A developer conference on Tuesday. Google has teamed up with HP to commercialize the system.

Google Beam uses a six-camera array that captures the topic from different perspectives. A KI video model assembles the views in real time to create a 3D person. According to Google, the system has almost perfect head tracking up to the millimeter with a video with 60 frames per second.

The idea is reminiscent of any number of holographic communication systems that can be seen in everything from Star Wars to Star Trek. In contrast to the tiny, qualitatively inferior princess Leia hologram from a new hope, Beam is designed in such a way that she is lifelong and lifelike. Google once described the technology as a “magical window”.

The Starline technology platform from Google is growing up and gets a new name, Google Beam.

The platform uses a light field display for which no special devices have to be worn. Cnets Abrar al-Heeti tried Starline last year and called it “the next thing I've ever seen”.

Language translation, a function that Google brings to Google Meet could also come to bars, said Google.

Google introduced Starline as a research project in 2021 and has tested and refined prototypes since then. Today's announcement means that the technology tends to be ready for the main time.

Video calls have long been plagued by challenges. It can be difficult to read expressions and gestures. Traditional video chats are missing a feeling of eye contact. Zoom fatigue was a hot topic during the height of Covid-19. Beam wants to tackle these problems with a more immersive and lifelike experience.

According to Google, HP will be communicated more about the platform on the InfoComm Audio Visual Technology Exposure in June. Google also works with zoom and other audio -visual companies. Beam will probably first shake with larger organizations, which shake the way in which video conferences deal with video conferences.

The first jet devices will later be available for early users in 2025. So start practicing your “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You are my only hope.”

Beam is not the only big announcement of Google of the day. Take a look at everything that was unveiled on Google I/O.
