Dozens of cyclists drove in silence through Peachtree City on Tuesday evening to honor the memory of Carl Wiggers, a businessman Coweta County, who was killed in a bicycle accident last month.

The background story:

The memorial was part of the national “Ride of Silence”, an annual event during the National Bike Month to remember that cyclists were killed or injured on public roads.

The event Peachtree City was organized by the Southside Cycling Club, which was founded 25 years ago in Fayette County after a local cyclist was seriously injured in an auto bike crash.

Wiggers died on April 5 after being hit by a truck when he drove on a two -lane road in Coweta County. The truck driver involved in the incident was charged.

The Peachtree City trip covered a little more than nine miles in a slow, reflective pace and began on the old Kmart car park with a police escort for security reasons. A social meeting followed the journey and gave friends, family members and other cyclists the opportunity to remember Wiggers and support each other.

What you say:

Cyclists who took part in the journey carried red – the favorite color of the Wiggers – as a homage. His wife Marcia Wiggers, also cyclist, took part in the event.

“This trip was in honor of Carl,” she said. “Red was his favorite color, so we all asked to wear red. And they did it.”

Keith Larson from the Southside Cycling Club said that the event was more than recalled – it is a call for improved traffic safety.

“May is the national month of bicycle, and Ride of Silence is just another way in which we come together as a community to recognize drivers and to work for better security,” he said. “Other trips took place on Tuesday in Decatur, Chattaochee Hills and Columbus.”
