The new report emphasizes the economic benefit in Chevron Raffinerie, Bring Richmond, West Contra Costa County

Richmond, California (KGO) – The Chevron Raffinerie in Richmond remains crucial for the financial health of West Contra Costa County.

This is the conclusion of a new report by the global consulting company Oxford Economics.

The report commissioned by Chevron says that the company is still the largest employer and taxpayer in Richmond in addition to supporting over 3,800 jobs.

“Five more are supported in the West Contra Costa County for 10 jobs here at Chevron.

Hubinger is Chevron's manager for company matters in the Bay Area.

He says that local and state political decisions have increasingly made the management of an oil company here.

All of them come at a time when several other oil and gas companies decided to leave California.

“It is becoming increasingly difficult to justify the types of large investments that you need to continue this company in our kind of business,” said Hubinger.

Politicians in the past and the present are very aware of the economic advantages that Chevron brings.

Environmental concerns are also a real problem and have often led to a balancing act between the city and the company.

A man who knows that the balancing act is good is Tom Butt, Richmond's former mayor.

“An enormous amount of income in the city comes directly or indirectly from Chevron. And frankly, Richmond would be bankrupt,” said Butt.

Butt says that Richmond is not replacing a real alternative to replacing the income that the Chevron refinery for the city.

However, he still believes that the company has also caused the city damage.

“There are people and companies who would never consider moving to Richmond because they are worried about the pollution of Chevron,” said Butt.

According to Hubinger, Chevron had led discussions about the opportunity to get out of Richmond permanently.

He says that the first choice of the company continues to offer economic advantages in East Bay.

“We have been here since 1902, over 100 years. As I said, we want to be here in Richmond. We think we have to be here in Richmond,” said Hubinger.
