Navy veteran in video inspires seniors to remain independent with the bus system

Pocatello -A new video of the Southeast Idaho government council helps the local seniors to gain confidence with the Pocatello Regional Transit Bus System and to highlight the local Marine -Sebee -Veteran Roger Armstrong as an example of independence and resilience.

As a named area V -Agentur für Aging and Economic Development District for Southeast -Daho, Sicog offers important services that support older adults, including transport training, nutrition programs and support for caregivers in Bannock and the surrounding counties. Sicog enables the elderly to remain active, committed and self -sufficient in their communities through these efforts.

Armstrong, a long -standing and active participant in Pocatello at the Pocatello Senior Citizen Center, is presented in the video as part of the SICOG travel training initiative in cooperation with the bus system known as a PRT.

Armstrong can no longer drive with a loss of vision due to macular degeneration. However, it cannot be slowed down by the challenges. He now uses PRTS Fixed Route bus system to get where he has to go.

“We all get older. The key is to get ourselves further. You have to stay active and stay in motion,” said Armstrong. “The bus system makes it easy to get where you have to go.”

Sicog is committed to aging to improve mobility and the access of older adults throughout Southeast -Idaho via his area v. The Travel Training Program is one of several services that help seniors to maintain independence by teaching them how to use public transit safely and effectively.

The video shows important elements of training, including reading bus plans, recognizing sights and compliance with safe travel practices. It also shows the ADA-accessible buses from PRT, which include wheelchair ramps and other functions that meet the requirements of all drivers.

“This is a great video,” said Laurie Bauer, manager for transport programs at Sicog. “It shows how an effective transport service can be in everyday life in order to stay independent and move on.”

Bauer emphasized that, although seniors are highlighted in this initiative, PRT emphasized not only for seniors. The transport service is intended for people of all ages.

In fact, PRT offers a free summer youth pass for drivers from the age of 18 and enables unlimited trips on fixed route buses from May 27th to August 30th. The passport helps to access the price of young people throughout the summer via the library, the pool, work and friends free of charge.
