Five EU legislators are faced with immunity against the Huawei scandal

Five members of the European Parliament are faced with loss of their immunity due to suspicion of corruption in connection with the Chinese company Huawei.

Parliament President Roberta Metsola said on Wednesday at the plenary session in Brussels that they received the application from the authorities in Belgium to abolish parliamentary immunity – ie the protection of legislators against law enforcement.

She explained that the application is now being transferred to the legal committee.

The legislators involved are the Italian representatives Fulvio Martusciello, Giisi Princi and Salvatore de Meo from the European People's Party (EPP), the Maltese Social Democrat Daniel Attard and the Bulgarian legislator Nikola Minge from Renew Europe.

The Belgian public prosecutor's office accused eight people in a potential new corruption scandal in the European Parliament two months ago and accused them of active corruption, money laundering and participating in a criminal organization. Offices in the European Parliament were searched in mid -March.

The investigations revolve around the allegations that the Chinese technology company Huawei tried to excessively influence the decision -making processes.

Chinese technology companies like Huawei have been criticized for years. There are special fears that China could influence the western telecommunications infrastructure.
