The latest leaks reinforce why the confidentiality of the source of journalists must protect

When the Trump administration quickly met our request from the Freedom of Information Act, which had set up its own rationales for the mass shift of the Venezuelans and for the reinforcement of the press, we had many theories about why.

Maybe someone in the Foia office used our request as an opportunity to blow the pipe. Maybe it was a kind of mistake. One possibility that never occurred to us was that the administration was higher tasks that the memo made them look good. After all, every President Donald Trump only knows the “best and serious people”.

But according to a report in the New York Times that happened. Who was the poor junior employee who somehow read a short, uncomplicated memo in which the government of Venezuela does not control the Tren de Aragua gang, as Trump claims, and taken as the opposite? The intelligence group had better stopped stopping from school from school, which made this child a degree!

However, it turned out that it was not a child. It was Joe Kent, chief of staff of the director of the National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. And understand the following: He is Trump's candidate to lead the national center of fighting terrorism. After a first memo, Trump's narrative apparently undermined that Venezuelan migrants are actually President Nicolás Maduro's secret foot soldiers, Kent called “rewriting some … This document is not used against the DNI or potus”.

The memo released to us was apparently rewriting – which confirmed the conclusions of the first memos. It was mentioned that the FBI believed that some Venezuelan government officials could communicate with some members of Tren de Aragua, but no serious legal minds believe that this is an invasion that justifies Trump's call in the extraterrestrial enemy law.

However, Kent somehow read it (or maybe that gives him too much recognition) and thought it confirmed the administration. Nobody else read it like that, including Foreign Minister (including) Marco Rubio. Rubio didn't even try to support the memo in somehow the government's guidelines – he only said that the secret service group misunderstood it.

The reason why Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) had first submitted the Foia was not to prove whether Maduro Gangbanger has dial or whether high -ranking intelligence officers have no intelligence. It should check whether the Attorney General Pam Bondi held water against the protective measures of her predecessor against precautionary journalists.

Bondi and Gabard claimed reports from the New York Times and the Washington Post were wrong when they found that intelligence agencies had incredulously incredulated claims about Trend de Aragua. According to these civil servants, the administration needed the ability to examine the source of the leak, including the summons of journalists, in order to protect the nation from so -called fake messages from the so -called deep state.

The memo confirmed, as we wrote beforehand that times and the post office did it right and the only thing that was a procedure for LECKS was embarrassed and his buddies with embarrassment. But the memo has turned more than that – it is exhibited why leaks serve the public interest for the press.

Here is a non -exexhusty list of messages that we are now due to the leaks for the time and after the post, the memo that we could request due to these leaks and the subsequent reporting.

  • Kent, the candidate who leads the national center of fighting terrorism, cannot understand basic secret service reports.
  • Kent asked the secret services to rewrite their results in order to save his bosses with embarrassment, and according to Times there are e -mails to prove this (we also submitted inquiries for them).
  • There is a large gap between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the intelligence group about one of the most important guidelines in the Trump government.
  • Gabard asked Bondi to initiate a leak examination based on lies.
  • Bondi raised the protection for reporters and its sources based on the same lies.
  • The masses of the United States have deported people to a dangerous prison in El Salvador in order to do slave work for a trump-friendly authoritarian hall on the same lies.

Practically every time the government has taken off against LECKS and claims a kind of threat to home, there is a real threat to its own reputation. Usually it takes years to confirm the obvious. It took decades for Nixon officials who once argued that the publication of the Pentagon papers would hardly endanger national security to admit that this was nonsense all the time. But this time we know the truth almost immediately thanks to Leck.

Bondi was right with one thing – the leaks undergrowed the administration guidelines. But she failed that they were guidelines that had to undermine because they were based on lies – the types of lies that intended the author of the constitution to uncover journalists when they wrote the press clause of the first constitutional additive. This has done the times, the post and its sources, and exactly the reason why the confidentiality of the source of journalists protects.
