Durham looks back in the first quarter of 2025, but the response times of the police were :: Wral.com

The violent crime in the first three months of the year has dropped in Durham compared to the same period in 2024.

The city defines violent crimes as murders, rapes, robberies and tightened attacks. In the first three months of the year, Durham had 349 violent crimes compared to 451 in 2024 in 2025.

Patrice Andrews, police chief of Durham, presented the results on Thursday in front of the city council.

“Immediately what you notice is that we saw a general reduction in our vocal times of violent crimes,” said Andrews.

However, the number of murders in the first three months of 2025 rose compared to the first three months of last year.

Durham police response times

In the first quarter of 2025, the Durham police needed an average of seven minutes and 12 seconds to react to an emergency call. The goal of the Durham police department is five minutes and 48 seconds.

“We really creep in our response times and we have simply not reached our goal in several years,” said Andrews.

“We have made numerous efforts to distract the calls to the lower priority for the service of our front officers. We are therefore very satisfied with the rate of people who do reports [Police to Citizen]This is our web -based system of submitting reports, ”said Andrews.

The Durham police reacted to 43.8% of the calls in less than five minutes. His goal is to react to 57% of emergency calls in less than five minutes.

Andrews said the Durham police were sworn in about 71% of personnel officials a year ago.

At the end of March, the department had 128 non-fluctuating employees from 146 available positions (87.7% staff).

“We see larger academies,” said Andrews. “We see fewer people go.”

Andrews said fewer officials left Durham's police department for other law enforcement authorities. On Thursday, she also quoted several recruitment initiatives to help with the HR department.

Andrews said that the authorities had returned around 314 of the 382 stolen vehicles in the first three months of 2025.

“In this order, Hyundais, Kias and Toyotas are what we see as the higher incidents of vehicles that are stolen,” said Andrews.

Andrews The stolen cars are not unique crimes.

“What we see are rings of networks of thieves who come in and work as a group,” said Andrews.

Andrews said the thieves often broke into cars and use them to commit other crimes.

On Thursday, Andrews also showed that Durham had stolen weapons in the first three months of the year.

“It was over our trajectory of the past few years,” said Andrews.

Andrews said that 73% of the 127 weapons that were stolen in the first three months of 2025 were taken out of a car.
