“Jackpoting” crimes on the advance of the twin ports

Duluth, Minn. (Northern News now) – Last week, two men were charged with Douglas County after allegedly stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars through “Jackpoting”, a crime that chopped into an ATM to give all of their money.

Jackpoting only first appeared in the USA in 2018 and Duluth only saw his first case in September 2024.

Since then there have been two successful cases of Jackpotten and five further attempts in the city with a total of more than 200,000 US dollars.

There were no arrests in DPDS jackpoting cases.

According to Duluth police department, jackpoting can be carried out in some species, but usually affects several people and more than a visit to the machine.

Someone will physically access the ATMs and either install malware or damage the existing hard drive.

Then you or an accomplice will return and program the damaged drive to give the money.

The DPD detective Ryan Temple said jackpoting was a chance crime, so it usually only occurs at banks at night.

“These people often go up on foot,” said Temple. “You are fully covered with masks and your hoods and cover your face so that you cannot be seen on the video. Then a lot depends on the banks that install the current software to prevent this type of thing.”

Banks are now installing new alarms that flash and sound a siren when someone tries to open the machine, the temple said to successfully frighten a few attempts.

Temple said the stolen cash does not come from a specific account of a specific person, the money is taken away from the bank.
