Bodybuilders are exposed to deaths with a high risk of sudden heart, the study studies.

The extreme muscle building doubles the risk of heart -related deaths.

40% of bodybuilder deaths in the study were suddenly and heart-related.

Bodybuilders push their limits through intensive movement, strict diets and in some cases the abuse of performance -enhancing medication. While the result is a shaped body, it is at costs and after a recently carried out study, the compromise is human life that is shortened.

The researchers found that those who over the years have extreme muscles, i.e. the professional bodybuilders, die twice as likely from sudden heart death as the general population. About 40 percent of deaths in all examined bodybuilders were suddenly and heart -related.

The research published on Tuesday (May 20) in the European heart journalsearched for reports on deaths under 20,286 male bodybuilders who had participated in at least one bodybuilding event between 2005 and 2020. The reported deaths were verified and later analyzed by doctors using several sources to establish the cause of death.

The researchers found 121 deaths in 20,000 professional builders, whereby the average age in death was 45 years. The results showed that bodybuilders performed a five -fold risk of heart death compared to amateurs.

“Most dead athletes came from North America (40.5 percent, mainly from the United States), followed by Europe (38.8 percent), Asia (7.4 percent), Africa (6.6 percent), South America (5 percent) and oceania (1.7 percent),” emphasized the study.

The post-mortem reports about some of the bodybuilders showed signs of thickening or enlarging the disease of the cardiac and coronary arteries. Some also abused anabolic substances, which significantly burden the heart, which leads to structural changes over time.

“Bodybuilding includes several practices that could affect health, such as extreme strength training, quick strategies for weight reduction, including serious nutritional restrictions and dehydration as well as the widespread use of various performance-enhancing substances,” said the co-edition Marco Vecchiato, an expert for sports medicine at Padova.

“While it is admirable to strive for physical excellence, the pursuit of extreme body transformation can bring considerable health risks at all costs, especially for the heart,” he added.
