A couple in Arizona marked their first anniversary with a camping trip in a remote part of the desert outside the Bumble Bee Road when they were shot in their truck, and their last moments, which were reminded in two scary snapshots.

It was almost two decades since the brutal murders of 19-year-old Lisa Gurrieri and her friend, 20-year-old Brandon Rumbaugh,. Lisa's mother, Paula Gurrieri, still hopes desperately for the answer to the only question she has – who killed her daughter and why?

Paula had a last conversation with Lisa and Brandon during her trip to the campsite. “I called her to look at them … I had to ask her if she was still there. She said: 'No, we are not there yet, mom, we have so many miles in front of her.' I said, “Ok, just be careful”, and that was the last conversation that I had, except “I love you”, the normal, “Paula told ABC15.

Lisa and Brandon both had several gunshot wounds. Lisa's mother said two objects were missing – a camcorder that she had borrowed from her and Lisa's key. However, detective found a disposable camera on site that provided some important evidence.

“In the camera we were able to show that it was bought while they were down there. They bought them in a grocery store in the Scottsdale area on the day they left. We were able to restore some photos of this camera.

“Two of them were pictures of Lisa in the bed of a truck and then in the Brandon in the bed of the truck. Then there is another picture that was overexposed – we believe when the camera was thrown – that only shows a very small corner that was not overexposed,” said Dokommander Tom Boelts from the district of the district of Yavapai.

The overexposed photo is said to have been taken to a restaurant in Bumble Bee in 2003.

The couple's photos are the first of all in front of their murders. Detective believe that something was wrong at that time.

Commander Boelts said: “We have a new detective in the event that he has been working on it for a few years. We have some volunteers who help him. We are … it is only a constant review of the evidence to see what was sent in, what was sent in, what the results were.

“At the moment we are in the phase in which we work with genealogy and try to get some of the DNA who were on site, so that we can create some leads and hopefully find out who did this.”

Lisa's mother is still overwhelmed by grief. She said, “I don't want to remember a weapon; I want to remember my daughter and I want her back. I want her so much back,” said Paula.

At the time of the murder, Lisa was employed by SRP while her friend Brandon worked as a personal trainer. They both lived in Scottsdale and decided to spend their anniversary camping under the stars.

Commander Boelts described the place and said: “So they landed from the I-17 from Bumble Bee Road. It is now quite popular for people who go to Crown King, was not quite as popular at the time, but it is a bleak part of the high desert.”

Paula was worried in the morning after the opening when she hadn't heard of them. She said: “On the day she was missing, I knew something was wrong. Name it the instinct of a mother, I don't know what it was, but I knew something was wrong.

An instinct that something had happened that Paula contacted to everyone she could imagine to start a search for the missing couple, and the police called.

Commander Boelts said: “Some friends of Brandon were alerted when he was not diving. They had already had conversations with them that Lisa and Brandon went up there. That they only vaguely camped in a place that Brandon had previously camped with this group of friends, and so, and in the intermediate state 17.

“I thought they went all the way to the Coconino County and drove around. They knew that it was on the Interstate, and so they got around with an off ramp, they didn't find them.

Detective believe that the couple slept or prepared to go to sleep when they were attacked. “There are indications that Lisa probably woke up at some point during the attack, but we can't say it at the moment,” said Comm. Boelts.

“There is still interest. There are many people we have interviewed, many people we examined. We cannot say that one of them is not interested, but it is one, yes, the nature of them is that they start and small. We are still small. Boelts.

Lisa's mother has always wondered whether this was jealousy, but that is still unknown. No matter how much time has passed, she never gives hope. “So it was difficult … I lost my daughter and at the same time lost my best friend,” said Paula.

A evidence found at the crime scene is currently being tested in a DNA laboratory. Detectives are optimistic that this case will soon be solved.

“It would be great if someone who is out there who knows something about it … Even if it is something he was not before he thought it was not so big deal, or they didn't understand the context, but they know someone who would have been in this area before I-17, north of Black Canyon City who acted strangely … call us,” call it. Boelts.
