College Park, Md. (AP) – Maryland's new sports director certainly understands the job description in 2025.

“We will concentrate on sales because we don't make a mistake to compete with the caliber of schools, not only in the big ten, but in the whole country, we have to increase our income,” said Jim Smith, while we were officially presented on Thursday. “We will try out a few new things – I will not tell anyone about you today – follow new approaches and use what I have learned from professional leagues.”

Maryland hired Smith last week and completed a fairly turbulent couple of months for the sports department. In March, sports director Damon Evans traveled to SMU, and at about the same time, the men's basketball coach traveled to Kevin Willard, to take on the job in Villanova. The Terps committed Buzz Williams quickly from Texas A&M to replace Willard.

Smith arrives from Baseballs Atlanta Braves, where he was the Senior Vice President of Business Strategy. He was also the president and CEO of the Alumni Association of Ohio State University and was a leading executive positions at Arthur M. Blank Sports & Entertainment, who are responsible for the income and marketing for the Atlanta United Major League Soccer.

“I think you can see that his vision is the next level outside the box,” said Brenda Frese, Maryland women's basketball coach. “It is a unique attitude that in these changing times in my opinion has been serviced a lot.”

Smith's challenge is to help Maryland with schools such as Michigan and the state of Ohio in the coffers of the sports department – both in the field and in the health insurers of the sports department. He said when he started with the falcons, they were in use near the NFL.

“If you are committed and concentrate on the goals, you will achieve it. We slowly did that in Atlanta,” said Smith. “There are no silver balls when it comes to equipping the bottom of the big ten to the top of the big ten from a turnover (point of view). But there are a lot of opportunities here.”

If College sports enter a new era that is expected to include the share of sales with the players, the ability to contribute money can feel an existential problem.

“I think if you said four years ago, this job is different and I am not the candidate,” said Smith. “I think it has developed today so that someone who understands how a campus works and can bring in various experiences with additional income.”

Maryland won national titles in men's and women's basketball in the last quarter of a century, and the men's lacrosse team is playing in the final this weekend. But football – and sometimes even basketball – tried to fight for the fan's attention in an area with many professional teams.

“We will concentrate on filling the Secu Stadium and the XFinity Center with TERP fans, and we will offer the best fan experience in the country,” said Smith.

Willard explained openly about the support he received from the sports department before he went, and coach Mike Locksley's football team took 4: 8-obtack last season he now had a local quarterback recruit Malik Washington.

“Coach Locks and I talked a lot about where we are as a program. I think he feels really good with the recruits we brought with us,” said Smith. “Part of it is our responsibility to ensure that he has the financing that is necessary to participate at the level with the other Big Ten programs.”
