Giant rat species that were recorded for the first time in Papua -New Guinea on video

According to the Czech Academy of Sciences, these rats can grow up to almost 3 feet and weigh almost 4.4 pounds.

In addition to the Filipino giant rat, the subalpine rats from Papua New Guinea are the largest in the world.

Frantisek Vejmelka, a Czech biologist at the Czech Academy of Sciences and the University of South Bohemia, said he had spent six months in Papua -New Guinea.

He was the first scientist to document the subalpine rat.

Before he recorded the video, the rat was only mentioned in museum materials in 1989.

The results of Vejmelka and his film material were published in the Scientific Journal Mammalia last month.
