Libya says oil leak appears in pipeline south of Zawiya City

(Reuters) – A oil leak forced the closure of a pipeline south of the city of Zawiya in Libya, said the National Oil Corporation (NOC) on Saturday.

Zawiya, 40 km west of the capital of Tripoli, houses the largest functioning refinery in Libya with a capacity of 120,000 barrels per day. The refinery is connected to the Sharara oil field of 300,000 numbers per day.

The NOC has published a picture that shows a stream of leaked oil in the desert. The river from the Hamada oil fields by the affected pipeline was immediately discontinued, the company said in a statement.

“In parallel to the maintenance work, a special team carries out an investigation to determine the causes of the leak. The agreements and the coordination are also in progress in order to regain the leaked oil and to remedy the resulting environmental pollution,” added the company.
