Marilyn Pauline Novak was born on February 13, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois. She is the second daughter of Joseph and Blanche (born Kral) Novak, both of whom appeared with her in the film The Notorious Mietlady. Her parents were chicago -native Czech descent. Joseph Novak (1897–1987) worked as a history teacher before becoming a freight dispatcher for Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad during the global economic crisis. Novak grew up in Catholic faith.

She visited the William Penn Elementary School, the Farragut High School and the Wright Junior College. During her studies, she received two scholarships at the School of Art Institute of Chicago.
