New laws could help prevent McClures “scandal”, says MSP

An MSP has welcomed the reform to legal provisions, of which he believes that they will avoid repeating the “scandalous” circumstances in connection with the closure of the Greenock McClure law firm.

It is to be hoped that new laws that have been passed by the Scottish government this week contribute to modernizing and improving the way in which legal services are regulated in Scotland.

The regulation of the legislative template for legal services (Scotland) will introduce a more flexible, more consumer-oriented system that offers clearer and swifter legal remedies for complaints.

Paul O'Kane, MSP for the West Scotland region, secured several changes during the third -level debate about the legislation.

This includes powers for the supervisory authorities to force lawyers to provide information to provide more proactive examinations and additional measures to ensure effective and efficient operation of regulatory systems.

Mr. O'Kane said: “Legislation is about increasing transparency and accountability, which has so far been a complicated system for people to navigate.

“The top -class case of McClures, in which customers had no answers, have little information about the examined complaints and very few ways to vent their anger.

“This legislation could help prevent this scandalous situation again by expressing the supervisory authorities much more proactive when examining concerns.

“Of course, it was very satisfactory to ensure some important changes in legislation to improve transparency and accountability.

“I fought for these changes because they have made some important adjustments that increased the scope of the law on how the law will help customers and consumers.”
