German head of finance calls for the “serious” EU-US-talks according to Trump Tariff Troh-Politico

“This trade conflict damages everyone and has to be ended quickly,” said Klingbeil.

Klingbeil met better at the summit of the G7 Minister of Finance in Canada last week. In the image interview, the German minister emphasized the need to decalate tensions and find a political solution, while at the same time it added: “As a European, we are united and determined to represent our interests.”

Trump's threat to hit 50 percent tariffs on European goods, sent shock waves over the European stock markets. On April 2, the US President initially levied a 20 percent tariff, later reduced to 10 percent and gave 90 days to complete a deal.

The ultimatum on Friday landed just a few hours before a call by the EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič with US trade representative Jamieson Greer and US trade secretary Howard Lutnick, which was considered a last offer to avoid a full-blown trade war. After the call, Šefčovič pushed “mutual respect, not threats” between the two side.

The European Commission “remains ready to work in good faith,” said Šefčovič in a position on social media. At the same time, “we are ready to defend our interests,” he said.
