Community Honors 4 Walkerton, Ontario, young people and teachers who were killed with several vehicles during the crash

The residents of Walkerton, Ontario, switched on their veranda lights and left running shoes outside to show their grief after four teenagers and their teacher were killed in a multi-vehicle accident outside of Londons last week.

A vigil at candlelight was also in the Walkerton District Community School, the K-12 school, in which the teenagers studied girls aged 16 and 17 and where the 33-year-old Matt Eckert worked as a teacher and trainer.

The fatal collision shaked the small community of Bruce County and triggered the support of the friends and family of the four girls and Eckert.

“It is an incredibly deep, deep scar that our community has added. It will take a long time to heal,” said Chris Peabody, the mayor of Brockton, the community, which also includes walking tone.

In a statement, the chairman of the Bluewater District School Board Jane Thomson and the education director Lori Wilder wrote that the loss for the entire community was devastating and offering support for students and employees.

“We recognize that many people in other communities all over the bluewater also have close connections to the people in this tragedy and their families. It is important to see how this tragedy affects them. We are all here to support each other,” says the explanation.
