Southampton 1 – 2 Arsenal

Martin Odegaard achieved a deceased winner when Arsenal ended his season with a 2-1 win in the Bottom Club Southampton, who ended the season with only 12 points.

Mikel Aretas Gunners only needed one point to secure second place in the Premier League, and ended up all three.

The visitors were frustrated for most of their last league game and their last in front of the transfer window. Mikel Merino met the bar, while Gabriel Martinelli saw a one-on-one conversation that was saved by the former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Instead, her opener came from an unlikely source in Kieran Terney. The defender played his last game before recovering Celtic on a free transfer, and ended the proximity of Ben White's Cross and celebrated wildly.

“He said yesterday that I will score a goal in my last Arsenal match and he did it,” said Mikel Areta. “So deserve him.

“A special thank you to him. He was part of this trip and he won with me. It is true that he went to Sociedad for a few months, but it was a pleasure to work with him.

“A very special character, and we wish him and his family all the best. The doors of this club are open to him. He is someone who is very, very popular in the club in the club in the changing room and we wish him for the best.”

But Arsenal was saved by a Southampton team after the break, who still wants to be the new head coach before the kick-off.

After the debutant of Saints, Jay Robinson, David Raya tested with a near-post drive, the home team got out of the resulting corner when Ross Stewart has been going home for his first goal since January 2023.

Nevertheless, Raya still shared the golden glove when Nottingham Forests Matz Sels did not keep a clean leaf, with the couple being bound for the season.

Arsenal pushed for a winner when Martinelli removed a effort from Yuki Sugawara, while the replacement had rejected Bukayo Saka a goal for the offside after Declan Rice had a well -saved effort.

Not quite a trophy, but a positive note to end.

Analysis: Arsenal's target sheath statistics add up around the season

Sam Blitz from Sky Sports at St. Mary's:

A hundred and a year – the last time that a team in episode won 14 games on the last day.

But in 1924 the year was also the year in which Arsenal recently reached a player in the league gates in the league gates.

Kai Havertz ended the Premier League season as a top goal scorer from Arsenal with nine, although he missed three months of the season due to a long-term thigh injury. The third place MAN City had a 20-goal striker, also Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

Brentford had two players with twice as many goals as Arsenal's top scorer, while the Gunners also ended 22 less goals than 91 last season.

All streets mean that this 25-goal player has to come in and arsenals have to sort problems. But could there be other ways to repair your target problems?

Odegaard could play a higher role next season when Martin Zubimendi arrives and even plays the middle of the midfield – so the Arsenal captain does not have to go so deep into the stem.

There could be a freshness in the wide areas, so Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli – six and eight goals this season – could achieve some support.

The defense of Arsenal is good – they have only become the third team of the Premier League, which gives a maximum of two goals in every game throughout the season. But there will be work to do in the future.

Areta: Believe me, we are there!

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta:

“I am very happy to end the match. We wanted to leave this dressing cabin at the end of the season with a positive energy and a good atmosphere.

“We also had to say goodbye to some players who won't be with us next season, and that was pretty emotional. I think they deserve their appreciation and a good atmosphere.

“We have done it and now we will have a lot of time to think, analyze what happened in the season to learn safely from taking all the incredible positive things that the team has done in relation to the circumstances, and consider, okay, how can we now go into this small percentage that is missing to get where we want.

“To achieve this, many things have to happen. The team has to offer, this player has to play a certain number of minutes and play. Believe me, we are there.

“We will try to squeeze and think of every stone that we may be able to do to make this club even more successful. But I think what these boys did, the team has everything that has happened, repeat, I think that deserves a lot of recognition.”

Southampton interim head coach Simon Rusk:

“The followers were great, it was not easy. But it is an appreciation for us as a whole club that we hold together. The seven games would be difficult games.

“I don't think they give up to three or four or give the whole season. We knew that there would be chopped water, but overall the fans can see that we did our best in context in unique circumstances.

“We absolutely wanted to give them something during the summer break. But they are a spicy side, we saw the changes that this team can do.”

To appoint Will Still and his own future:

“First of all, congratulations on the appointment.

“Everyone looks different, I would like to think that he saw a team that, despite difficult circumstances, saw a team that was committed, she had dignity and proud to end the season.

“If I am honest, I am not sure in the next steps. My focus is on supporting the players in rather unique circumstances.

“An experienced manager would find a challenge in seven weeks that has relegated in the Premier League.

“I am really open to what comes next. I was a first team coach, assistant and head coach. I am quite young. I am open that the next steps are for me.”
