AI-powered shoe injection revolutionize sports training and recovery of injuries

A new wave of portable technology could soon change the way people recover, train in sports and manage chronic health states. A team of researchers from the University of Portsmouth recently developed an intelligent inner sole that supports more than just their feet. It follows how your body interacts with the floor – data, the doctors, athletes and researchers consider everyone to be essential.

From laboratory devices to daily use

Measuring the forces between their feet and the ground – the ground reaction forces or GRFS – has long been important in areas such as training science, rehabilitation and injury prevention.

This data shows how muscles and joints work during movement. But for years this type of measurement required large, expensive laboratory tools such as power plates or instrumented treadles. These devices work well, but they are determined in laboratories, which means that they cannot help much in real environments such as gyms, parks or houses.

This is where the new intelligent insoles come into play. Created through a partnership between a university and a technology company and offers this portable device a inexpensive, mobile solution that everyone outside of a laboratory can use. Driven with artificial intelligence (AI), these insoles change the way scientists and doctors understand human movement.

Smart Tech, hidden in your shoe

Each inner sole contains two main components. The first is a pressure sensor system that is called capsense and is annoyed when moving the pressure. The second is an inertia measuring unit (IMU) that follows the foot movement through acceleration and rotation. Together, these sensors feed data in a special AI model.

The dual stream note model behind the system uses both types of data in real time. It automatically selects which data stream is more useful for different parts of the movement of a person. This helps to improve the accuracy in predicting GrFs. In tests, the system showed a prediction error of only 4.1%. Earlier devices with similar goals had error rates between 8% and 20%, which made this new model much more reliable.

Dr. Dinghuang Zhang, a senior researcher in the project, said: “We wanted to create an affordable and portable alternative to expensive laboratory equipment. These insoles could help athletes to improve performance, support doctors in rehabilitation and even pursue people to their movement for general health.”

Designed for daily life

In contrast to bulky laboratory machines, these insoles are made for daily wear. This includes a small built -in battery that supplies the sensors with electricity for up to eight hours. The insoles combine wirelessly with Bluetooth with a nearby computer. All movement and printing data are saved in organized files that contain time stamps, which makes it easy to pursue changes over time.

The intelligent insoles have already shown their benefits in many situations in the real world:

  • Prevention of sports and injury: Athletes can pursue any movement, remove poor form and avoid injuries.

Dr. Tim Exal, a biomechanics expert in the team, said: “All human movements, be it in elite sports, leisure activities or rehabilitation, is caused by forces. It is a player to improve sports performance, identify the risks of injuries, and to support recovery after injuries or other diseases.”

More than just sport

While the intelligent insoles in sports and rehabilitation have a strong commitment, they were also inspired by a more serious health concern – diabetic foot care. Many people with diabetes suffer from peripheral neuropathy, an illness that blows the feeling in their feet. This can lead to unnoticed high pressure areas that can become ulcers. If these ulcers are not treated, they can cause infections or even require amputations.
