The EU needs to be used for US trade talks by July 9, says Chief, Chief says

The EU's head said that she was ready to move “quickly” to agree to a trade agreement with the United States, but says that the block needs until July 9 to agree to “good business”.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that on Sunday she had a “good call” with US President Donald Trump – two days after he was frustrated and threatened with 50% tariffs about the pace of negotiations.

Trump announced a 20% tariff for most EU goods last month, but lasted it to 10% until July 8th to grant time for negotiations.

The Leyen said that Europe was “ready to promote the talks quickly and determined” and “to achieve good business, we would need the time until July 9”.

In comments to reporters in the White House on Friday afternoon, which was the hours before talking to the block, Trump said that he had to increase the tariffs for all goods from the EU by June 1, with negotiations into account impatience in negotiations.

Later on Friday, the EU's executive chief confirmed the EU's commitment to ensure that the block is committed to a fair deal.

After a call with the US trade representative Jamieson Greer and the Commercial Secretary Howard Lutnick, he said: “The full EU has undertaken to ensure a deal that works for both.”

He continued: “The EU-US trade is unsurpassed and must be guided by mutual respect and not by threats. We are ready to defend our interests.”

Trump has long criticized what he sees as an unfair trade relationship with the EU, although the block is one of the largest trading partners in Washington. Last year, the EU exported more than 600 billion USD (EUR 528 billion; EUR 443 billion GBP) to the USA, while according to the US government data, they imported a value of USD 370 billion.

The President expressly expressed concerns about trade in cars and agricultural goods. Although some tariffs were carried out at the beginning of this year to enable negotiations, there remains 25% for EU steel and aluminum.

The European leaders continue to warn of escalation. France and Germany called for a diplomatic solution and emphasized that tariffs would harm both economies.

The EU has threatened and held its own measures against the United States.

It is said that it would be a tariff from 25% to € 18 billion ($ 20 billion;

The block currently advises additional measures against US imports in the USA worth € 95 billion.
