Robbinhood ransomware: The Iranian man is guilty of cyber crimes that the US government costs millions

An Iranian man who used Robbinhood ransomware to guilty millions of governments and organizations in the USA on Tuesday before a court in North Carolina.

According to the US Ministry of Justice, Sina Gholinejad, 37, is guilty of counting computer fraud and abuse as well as a conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Ransomware is a kind of malware that users, companies or organizations should refuse access to their data stored on computers or servers. In the case of a ransomware attack, the data is often encrypted and criminals require payment for the decryption key.

Gholinejad could be exposed to prison for up to 30 years, although this does not appear likely.

“Gholinejad and his co-conspirators, all of whom were overseas, caused tens of millions of dollars and disturbed essential public services by using the Robbinhood ransomware against US cities, health organizations and companies,” said Matthew Galeotti, head of the crime department of the US Ministry of Justice.

The public prosecutor also added that Gholinejad and his co -conspirators blocked the victim's files and hardware, often blackmailed payments in Bitcoin and then washed this money through cryptocurrency services.

The Ministry of Justice announced in 2019 that the government of Maryland's capital Baltimore was declining for months due to the ransomware used by Gholinejad. Ultimately, it lost more than $ 19 million due to the damage to the city's computer networks “and the resulting disturbance of several important urban services, including online services for the processing of property taxes, water bills, parking quotations and other functions for earning generations”.

The indictment said that the Ransomware attacks from Gholinejad and in 2019 to early 2025.

Although many of the court documents remain sealed for the examination of his crimes, several that have been opened that an arrest warrant for Gholinejad was issued in 2024 and that this year he was arrested in North Carolina.

Gholinejad is to be convicted in August.

According to a new data injury report from Verizon, there has been considerable growth of threats from ransomware in recent years.

However, there is a silver strip: the average amount paid to ransomware groups went back to around 115,000 US dollars, compared to USD 150,000 in the previous year.

Another ray of hope was, according to the report, that 64 percent of the ransomware victims did not pay the ransom.

According to Verizon, forty-four percent of the ransomware victims were local US governments, but similar bodies and municipalities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa were affected.
