The story behind Netflix 'Angi: Fake Life, True Crime

IN 2008 would result in the death of a fashion designer in an apartment in Barcelona one of the coldest and most disturbing crimes in recent Spanish history. The perpetrator? A woman who hid behind fake names invented life and had an uncanny ability to manipulate others. This is the story of María Ángeles Molina – simply known as Angi – the main topic of Angi: false life, true crimeA documentary on Netflix on May 1st.

In two episodes, director Carlos Agulló immerses deep into a case that shocked the country: the murder of Ana Páez – a woman who not only kills Molina, but also supports a fraud scheme that was fake identities, life insurance policies and a trail of lies how complex.

The murder of Ana Páez

Ana was a 35-year-old fashion designer who believed that he had found a friend, a mentor and a trustworthy figure in Angi. The two had known each other for about 10 years after they had met in the same company, and their bond had only become stronger over time. Molina presented herself as a successful entrepreneur, cultivated and generous and never hesitated to shower Ana with praise. What Ana didn't know was that Angi had a plan to steal her identity – and finally her life.

On February 19, 2008, Ana was found dead in a rented apartment in Barcelona. It was naked, with a plastic bag above the head sealed with tape. The scene initially suggested a sexual crime, but the evidence pointed out something that was far more calculated. Shortly before the murder, CCTV film material showed that Angi was wearing a bank and was wearing a wig and picked up € 600 from the Ana account.

Then she drove a Porsche to Zaragoza, where she picked up her father's ashes – he died the year before. According to the court, this was part of an carefully constructed alibi. When she was back in the apartment, Molina Ana interrupted with a non -identified substance before she suffocated.

Carry out a crime that never happened

Angi tried to cover up the murder by carrying out sexual assault. For this purpose, she paid two men in a male brothel in Barcelona for seed samples that she planted at the scene. But the investigators quickly dismantled the wrong story. The evidence consistently pointed out to Angi, who, if he was interrogated, showed several contradictory versions of the events.

Once she claimed that at the time of the murder she bought a watch from El Corte Inglé. Later she said she stopped buying yogurt. In one of the most bizarre statements of the case – with troubling cold – she told the court: “I am not without yogurt or condensed milk.” The sentence was stunned by both the victim's family and the judges.

The fraud program

The murder was part of a wider financial fraud system. Before Ana's death, Molina had applied for several loans and life insurance policies on behalf of Ana with fake documents. Some of the guidelines had significant payout values. The plan was clear: remove Ana, accept your identity and collect the money.

Molina also used the identity of another woman, Susana B. She allegedly acquired Susana's personal data after Susana had left a copy of her documents in a copy shop. Molina used the information to open bank accounts and carry out fraudulent transactions.

The police found crucial evidence, including the documents of Ana hidden behind the water tank in Molina's bathroom, and a sealed bottle of chloroform – the resolutions.

The attempt

In 2012, the court came to the conclusion that “the amount and the relevance of the evidence were in detail”, without a doubt about the perpetrator. Molina was sentenced to 22 years in prison: 18 for murder and 4 for falsification of documents.

A suspicious past

Ana Páez 'murder prompted the authorities to reopen an earlier case: the death of Molina's husband, Juan Antonio Álvarez Litben. The 45-year-old businessman had suddenly died under unexplained circumstances. The renewed investigation made serious suspicion of Molina's participation, especially since she inherited his assets. But the case remains unresolved without material evidence.

A life of deception

Molina has produced several identities over the years. She claimed to be a psychologist, lawyer, cancer patient in treatment, a mother of non -existent children and a victim of abuse. It even lacked pregnancies and used social media to strengthen its elaborate inventions. She was a full -time actress in her own lies network.

Agulló said to explore the material for Angi Was to navigate like a “Hall of Mirrors”. “We checked over 2,000 pages with legal documents, reports and family files. We have carried out more than 60 interviews with retired police officers, detectives and people who are close to both cases,” he said. “It was a diverse examination – just like Angis many identities.”
