Oxon Hill, Md. – – The Scripps National Spelling Bee celebrates a century of competition, language and academic excellence. The event, which was held for the first time in 1925, has developed from a newspaper ponentation to a global writing history, which is now organized in a congress center in Oxon Hill, Maryland, outside of Washington, DC

Although this is the 100th anniversary of the bee, it is technically the 97th time that the competition took place. How the competition works

The background story:

In order to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the students have to win a regional spelling bee and meet the registration requirements – they must be in eighth grade or older than 15.

The competition begins with two preliminary rounds: an oral spelling and a multiple-choice vocabulary round. Magicians who progress then make a written spelling and a vocabulary that determines who passes to the quarter -finals.

From the quarter -finals to the final, all rounds are oral. If the judges cannot determine a winner by standard rounds, they can use a “tension” tiebreaker to crown the champion. All words used in the bees are selected from the unabridged dictionary by Merriam-Webster.
