Chlorgasleck calls for evacuations, road closures in the hobe sound

One person was taken to a hospital and parts of the Dixie Highway are closed in Martin County after a chlorine leak on Thursday.

According to Martin County Fire Rescue, several units were sent to an incident with dangerous materials on the Southeast Third Street and Southeast Dixie Highway shortly before 11 a.m.

The crews arrived at the scene and learned that a 150 pound cylinder, which was used for water treatment, took chlorine. Two other tanks were rated.

One person was brought to a Jupiter hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As a security measure, Fire Rescue found that the evacuations took place within a radius of 330 feet along the Southast Third Street.

The Dixie Highway was also closed on all traffic in the area.

The drivers are asked to avoid the area.

In a social media post at 12:30 p.m., the crews said that they had successfully isolated the chlorine leak and removed the tank.

Fire Rescue said that they actively monitor the chlorine gas mirror in the source area to ensure public security.

“We assume that the ventilation efforts improve air quality and enable the area to open up again soon,” said the post office.
