Trump ends the Chinese tariff and increases the costs for online goods

The Trump administration officially removed a gap on Friday that enabled American buyers to buy cheap goods from China without paying tariffs. The step will help us manufacturers who have tried to compete with a wave of inexpensive Chinese products, but has already managed to shop online at higher prices for Americans.

The gap, which is referred to as de -Minimis rule, permitted products of up to 800 US dollars to avoid tariffs and other bureaucracy as long as they were sent directly to US consumers or small companies. It led to an increase in individually mentioned packages to the United States, many of which were sent by Air and ordered by rapidly growing e-commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu.

A growing number of companies have used the gap in recent years to bring their products to the USA without putting the tariffs. After President Trump had raised the duties for Chinese goods during his first term, companies began to use the liberation in order to avoid these tariffs and continue to sell their products more cheaply to the United States. The use of the gap in the second term of Mr. Trump increased when he met Chinese goods with at least 145 percent tariff.

In 2023, US -TOAL and Border Protection processed one billion of such packages, the average of which was 54 US dollars.

In a cabinet meeting in the White House on Wednesday, Mr. Trump described the gap as “fraud”.

“It is a big fraud against our country, against really small companies,” he said. “And we ended, we put it an end.”
