Fallen Chicago fire brigade captain, who was honored at Wake after the death in West Side Blaze

Fallen chicago fire cpt. David Meyer was honored with a wake on Monday, less than a week after he was killed when he fought a fire on the west side of the city.

A funeral fair takes place on Tuesday.

What we know:

Meyer was commemorated as the rock of his family, an experienced craftsman, a loyal friend and an extraordinary fireman.

There were long lines of mourners who gathered for Meyer's public visits to the Malec & Son funeral home.

He was killed on duty last week when he fought against a garage fire in the Austin district. He was taken to the hospital after the roof collapsed but did not survive.

The background story:

Meyer was a 29-year-old veteran of the Chicago fire brigade and mainly served on the west side of the city. He was last assigned to Truck 29.

He and his wife had been together since they were both 14 years old. He leaves four children and his parents.

Charles Green, 44, a convicted criminal, was charged with murder and arson after being accused of setting the fire.

Meyer was the first firefighter to kill this year.

Firefighters from all over Illinois, residents and city councils of Chicago were all present on Monday evening.

What's next:

A funeral service for Meyer will take place on Tuesday in St. John Brebeuf Church in Niles.
