Terry Addison, fire chief of South Salt Lake, said the incident started shortly after 5 p.m. when an unoccupied truck caught fire. Firefighters said that a power line was on the truck below, which may have started the fire. The exact cause is examined.

The crew noticed flames from the ground while combating the truck. They found that there was a gas leak under the street and the gas company informed.

The gas was switched off shortly after 9 p.m. and the fire had failed, but the evacuation was still at 9:45 p.m. while the gas leak was dissolved. The fire chief said that the evacuation order would remain on the spot overnight.

According to the fire brigade of South Salt Lake, electricity and gas were restored to the area from 7:30 a.m., but the road is still closed along the West Temple, as the gas company still has heavy equipment and holes on the street to try to achieve gas pipes.

The Trax service in the region was temporarily closed. It was restored around 10 p.m.

An evacuation house is available in a church in 3805 S. Main Street. The city said pets were allowed. Addison estimated that around 300 people from the region were evacuated.
