The landlord of Plainfield gets the 6-year-old Palestinian American boy for 53 years in prison in hate crimes

A landlord of Plainfield was convicted of 53 years in prison on Friday because he had attacked his Palestinian American tenant and killed her son, the 6-year-old Wade Al Fayoumi,-26 times in one of the most violent hate crimes to follow October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks in Israel.

But the verdict was not enough to comfort the boy's grandfather, who asked the convicted Joseph Czuba in court, to explain why he did it.

“We want to know what has made him,” Mahmoud Yousef told the judge shortly before the conviction. “What kind of news he heard, either on TV or on the radio or whatever, that made him do it [of] Crime.”

The public prosecutor said that Czuba was radicalized by conservative news comments about the war in Gaza.

Yousef then turned and stared at Czuba and said: “Say for our peace of mind, Mr. Joseph.”

But the answers didn't come.

Czuba refused to speak to County Richter Amy Bertani-Tomczak, who condemned the prison sentence: 30 years for the murder of Wadeee; 20 for trying to kill his mother Hanan Shaheen; and two 3-year sentences that are also to be admitted to the counts of hate criminal. The judge also did not comment on describing it as a brutal crime.

It was not the maximum judgment of life that the judge could have imposed. But Czuba will probably not survive his sentence. His lawyer said the 73-year-old had cancer in stage 4.

After the court, Wadee's father said that he was still confused about how Czuba, of which he said he once admired his boy and regarded him as a “angel”, changed so suddenly and described him as a “devil Muslim”, as the prosecutors claimed in court.

Yousef said reporters that no judgment could bring justice.

“It doesn't matter what numbers are. He took life to us,” he said.

“I was afraid that they would make me Jihad,” he said in a video that was shown during the process.

The now ex-wife of Czuba, who was not at home at the time of the attack, said that she had resorted to Czuba's claims that Shaheen would bring friends to harm him. She said that Czuba had no reservations about Shaheen's Muslim faith or Palestinian background when he rented her on the Czuba Lincoln Highway in 2021.

The judgment praised the Chicago chapter of the Council for American Islamic relations.

“No judgment can restore what has been recorded, but today's result provides a necessary level of justice,” said Ahmed Rehab, Executive Director of Cair-Chicago, in a statement. “Wade was an innocent child. He was targeted because he was – Muslim, Palestinian and loved. Our work is now to ensure that no other child suffers from the fatal consequences of hatred.
